Malcolm Gladwell argues in his “Small Change: Why the
Revolution Will Not Be Tweeted” essay
that many users tend to think that
Facebook friends are real as real life friends. He claims that social media is
built around weak ties and it would not create social change; Activism that
takes place in a social media network just isn’t the same as the real thing.
Gladwell believes that high risk activism took place in the past generations
because of strong ties and close relationships. Social media does not have
strong ties that will be able to carry out a high activism and social change. I think that his key arguments are misguide. Anything
that is posted on Facebook and/or any other social network is like a mad
disease. Within minutes of posting anything, it can gets spread across the
whole entire world in seconds. Facebook is about sharing and connecting with
families, friends, and communities. Facebook provide causes and nonprofit organizations
throughout communities. I believe social media is a tool. With this powerful
tool, it can have impact on social change. It’s not about social media but how
we as a society uses this tool.
